Customary Measurment System

The customary measurement system is based on a variety of measurements. The Egyptians have evidence that proves that they may be the earliest civilization that discovered a standard unit for length. The Egyptian cubit was developed about 3000 BC, the unit was based on the length of the arm (from the elbow to the extended finger). The Customary Measurement System is used by the United States. But other than the US, people use the Metric System. Customary measures are usually written in fractions or mixed fractions.

Here are four different units of measurments:

LENGTH - inches/feet/yards/miles

WEIGHT

- ounces/pounds/tons

CAPACITY

-fluid ounces/cups/pints/quarts/gallons

It was adopted by the French revolutionary assembly in 1795, and the first metric standards (a standard meter bar and kilogram bar) were adopted in 1799. Around the worldalmost everyone besides the US uses the metric system.

The metric system measures many things such as:

MASS

- milligram/gram/kilogram/metric ton

TEMPATURE

-degrees Celcius

AREA

-square meter/square kilometer

VOLUME

-milliliter/liter/cubic centimeter/cubic meter

SPEED

-meter per second/kilometer per second
